Jack Dorsey, CEO of Block, has launched the beta version of BitChat, a decentralized peer-to-peer messaging app designed to prioritize privacy and resilience. Unlike traditional messaging platforms, BitChat operates entirely Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks, eliminating the need for internet connectivity, central servers, or user accounts, making it a game-changer for secure communication in challenging environments.

BitChat leverages a store-and-forward architecture, allowing messages to be temporarily cached on devices for offline peers and delivered once they reconnect. This feature ensures reliable communications in scenarios like protests, disaster zones, or areas with heavy censorship, where internet access may be unreliable or compromised. The app supports end-to-end encryption for all message types—private, group, or broadcast—ensuring that only intended recipients can access the content.

Large messages are fragmented into 500-byte chunks to optimize transmission over Bluetooth’s 30-meter range, with bridge nodes enabling multi-hop relaying to extend coverage. Described by Dorsey as having “IRC vibes,” BitChat draws inspiration from early internet chat protocols while incorporating modern privacy-preserving protocols. The app supports hashtag-named group chats with optional password protection and stores messages ephemerally in device memory, reducing the risk of data breaches.

“My weekend project was to learn about Bluetooth mesh networks, relays, store-and-forward models, and message encryption,”

Dorsey shared on X, introducing BitChat as a resilient, censorship-resistant communication tool.

BitChat’s decentralized design aligns with Dorsey’s long-standing advocacy for user-controlled, privacy-focused technologies, following his work on Twitter and the decentralized social platform Bluesky, from which he stepped down in May 2024.

The app is open-source on GitHub and available in beta via Apple TestFlight, inviting developers and privacy advocates to explore and contribute to its evolution. Future updates may include WiFi support to enhance bandwidth and range, broadening its applications.
