Cetus Protocol, the primary decentralized exchange (DEX) and liquidity provider on the Sui blockchain, has allegedly suffered a major security breach, according to multiple posts on X. Reports indicate that an attacker drained approximately $11 million worth of $SUI tokens from the SUI/USDC liquidity pool, causing significant disruption across the Sui ecosystem.
The incident, which was reported on early May 22, 2025, has led to a sharp decline in token prices, with many tokens on the Cetus platform reportedly plummeting by over 75% as liquidity pools were nearly emptied. The SUI/USDC pool appears to be the hardest hit, with some sources claiming additional losses across other pools, potentially totalling tens of millions.
Cetus, a concentrated liquidity DEX built on the Sui and Aptos blockchains, is a cornerstone of Sui’s decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, known for its high transaction speed and low fees. The platform facilitates efficient token swaps and supports features like Auto Vault LP Strategies for simplified liquidity management. The reported hack has raised concerns about the security of Sui’s DeFi infrastructure, which has seen rapid growth, with a total value locked (TVL) reaching $2 billion earlier this year.
Details of the hack remain unverified, and no official statement from Cetus Protocol or the Sui Foundation has been released as of this report. Most posts suggest the incident is under investigation, but the lack of official confirmation has fueled uncertainty. Users are advised to exercise caution and avoid interacting with affected pools until further clarity is provided.
The Sui ecosystem, often dubbed a “Solana killer” for its high-performance architecture and use of the Move programming language, has been a hotspot for DeFi innovation. However, this alleged exploit could undermine confidence in the network’s security, especially as it competes with established blockchains like Ethereum.
The crypto community is closely monitoring the situation, with some speculating that the exploit may impact the broader Sui ecosystem, including memecoins and other projects like Suirum, which recently launched on Cetus.
